Ten Deadly Clichés of Pinoy Gay Movies

10. Gays have money, while straight men are poor.

9. Gay men just want to be women.

8. Gays have a tendency to go insane.

7. Straight men are desirable, while gays are not.

6. Male prostitutes have good hearts, while their bosses and clients do not.

5. Gays who are not out and flamboyant are confused or lonely.

4. Safe sex does not exist.

3. Gay relationships don’t last.

2. Giving in to gay desire leads to violent death.

1. Bottoming is the ultimate suffering.

What other gay movie cliché bugs you? Can you name the films that are major offenders of these clichés?

very true... these are the cliches that are said to be the formula of a gay-themed movie. i am just worried that when continue to exist then people will once again be conditioned of a wrong notion about gay people...
sometimes i don't know what these movie makers prioritise, is it really the liberation of people's mind against the stereotypes about gays or is it just plain commercialism... hope we keep our eyes wide open.

for me it depends upon the person...kung magpapatali sila sa ganoong sistema ay nasa sa kanya na...pero kung ang tao ay nasa tama at tanging tama lang ang kanyang pinapa-iral...siguro ay masasabi kong medyo mali ang mga pagkaka-intindi nila sa mga bakla...thanks

To answer your question of a any movie that shows all of these clichés, unfortunately, with the exception of let say 2 or 3 films (dose & The Amazing Truth.. comes into mind) all are guilty of these clichés. The proper question should be, what Gay indie films have not used this clichés

I think we could blame the great Lino Broka on this one, what started as an art film (Macho Dancer) became the standard template of most if not all Pinoy gay films. Broka together with Celso Ad Castillo started the trend to show nudity to question or challenge the morale guardians then. Curent film makers, either targeting gay or straight men, are just crap film makers or just plain exploiters saying that they are doing indie films.

Anyway nice blog, keep up the good reviews - your reviews help especially in these trying times, sayang din ang pera.

They didn't get the clue from "The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros". When the film made good box office in the Philippines and when a string of awards- when it won in Berlin the jury mentioned "For its joyous and convincing portrayal of a queer boy living in an environment of acceptance and tolerance."

essentially, that's what most pinoys think about homosexuality. sad.

Let's add:

11. Gays only get sex either by paying men or through violence or some other means that entail exploitation

12. A homosexual's life only revolves around sex

The sad thing is that aside from the fact that these motifs/themes are present in most local gay movies, they are also reflective of some real-life situations.

it's classic chicken and egg scenario, does art reflect life or does life immitate art?

Only thing I know, the perception of homosexual individuals and of the homosexual 'world' will never change unless the masses (ie: general audience of gay movies) are not helped in educating themselves about OTHER realities of the homosexual life.

Kudos to your blog. I'ma fan. keep up the good work!

All of this cliches push us to disrespect Filipinos because of their narrow-mindedness about gays and discrimination against gaymen.

ang hirap kc sa atin. kahit tayo mali ang reference natin sa sarili natin. the word gay is an adjective so wala yang plural form. if we want to use it in plural forms e di samahan ng noun na pd na lagyan ng s or kung anumang plural form. We are gay men. Kakainis yang mga str8 pag nagsalita, ARE YOU A GAY? grabeh, kakabingi! panu nagkaroon ng article na A ang adjective. DB dapat ARE YOU GAY? Yang mga str8 at kahit ilan sa atin ang hilig mag discriminate ang bulok naman ng English!

Precisely! Excellent post. Someone has got to make a film to deviate from this one-dimensional outlook. Sadly, most producers just want more money, and to make more money, you sell out.

I second Oliver. There is only one good and that is knowledge; one evil, ignorance.
